BIDZ.com Online Auction

Program review by Merle Braley, Internet Marketing Advisor

It takes a thief to catch a thief…

White Collar Crime fighter Sam “Sammy” Antar should know

“White collar criminals consider your humanity as a weakness to be exploited in the execution of their crimes.” –-Sam E. Antar

The While Collar Fraud blog alleges that BIDZ.com is not compliant with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)… The blog is maintained by none other than Sam “Sammy” Antar, infamous for his role as mastermind in the Crazy Eddie criminal securities fraud. Antar was the CFO at electronics retailer Crazy Eddie, which turned out to be one of the largest financial frauds of the 80’s.

Better Business Bureau gives BIDZ.com an F - its lowest rating…

“For its customer service, the Better Business Bureau says Bidz’s “F” is based on customer complaints of shoddy merchandise and misrepresentation of items’ quality or value.” –- LA Times

Customers say BIDZ.com is guilty of Bait and Switch…

“…well they said everything was precious stones and diamonds, and yet when you get it, it turns out to be cubic zirconia… and here I am thinking I’m getting thousands of dollars of nice jewelry…” – - Mary from Calif. (unhappy customer of BIDZ.com)

  2. Bidz.com makes their jewelry appear to be so appealing when you view it on their website. However, when you receive the jewelry from them, it appears to be maybe about 1/3 the size of what it looks like when you view it online. Why else would they have to charge a 15% “restocking” fee if we return their jewelry? Does it really cost $150 just to restock a 1.25 carat diamond solitaire ring that the consumer bids $1000 on? I think that I will buy my products from the Home Shopping Network from now on.

  3. I TOO have bought jewelry from Bidz.com… the product I received, was also NOT what was shown… the comment made when I called them was “Well, you can always return the item, IF your not satisfied”…UGH! You wait hours, sometimes days to bid on an item, then when you “win your bid” & it arrives; it’s NOT what is shown in picture. Best they can do is ask you to “return it”? Wrong, just wrong.. bad business practice if you ask me…

  4. Since buying from them I have noticed that quality has gone down and grading of stones have been misleading. Their grade of a GH-SI was graded locally by 2 independent gemologists as KL-I2 which is and was way off the grading sheet. But since there is no standard in which everyone follows it makes it more difficult to believe in Bidz grading. I think a class action lawsuit should be started it would at least get them either to shape up or get out of this business as litigation will be costly.

  5. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT BIDZ.COM GETS AWAY WITH THE OUTRAGEOUS SHIPPING FEES THEY CHARGE. I ORDERED A TINY RING, THEY CHARGED ME $10.82 FOR A THREE OZ. RING, IN A TINY LITTLE BAG. THEY DON`T TELL YOU THE POSTAGE UNTIL YOU GET TO THE END, AND THEY ALREADY HAVE YOUR CREDIT CARD NO. SO YOU NOT ONLY GOT RIPPED OFF BY THE MERCHANDISE, BUT POSTAGE ALSO. THIS CAN`T BE LEGAL.

  6. Your information about BidzBuy explains why I felt so let down after receiving my orders. Some was so cheap looking, I couldn’t give it to anyone as a gift and I surely wasn’t going to wear it.

A few items were beautiful and I felt I got my money’w worth, but others appeared to be “just junk”.

I’m glad to see I’m not alone in feeling ripped off.

  7. I returned 4.5 ctw diamond bracelet for $2,000, they never refunded my money. I had returned 3 bracelets, two got refunded but one didn’t. I called Return department, they said they received items and refunded money, but my credit card didn’t show this credit. They also ripped me off on 15% restocking fees for more then $6,000. I returned so many rings and never received refunds for my returns. They are very smooth with telling credit card companies they they have refunded your monies, with other returns. My experience in the 1st was good, but at the end after Christmas, they started messing up,telling me that they can’t get to all the returns, and they did not receive my packages and that they only refunded my large purchases, not the small purchases, some items got refunds, but not all the items I sent get my refund. Well my credit card balances did not get smaller, becasue they gave me bake $22.00 instead of $220, or $35 for $350. “CREDITS WERE NOT PROPERLY BEING GIVEN”. I knew becasue my credit card balances were not getting smaller.
Now FINANCIAL CRISES at my hands.

  8. Would I buy a diamond ring from bidz.com? The answer is NO. However, I have ordered several items on different occasions from this site and each has been represented accurately according to both the description and the picture shown. Furthermore, I have never had any of the items turn my fingers green, as I have with other “costume” jewelry shopping sites. If you are looking to get a deal on lower cost gems, which local jewelry stores significantly mark up, this is the place for you.

  9. I was ripped off by BIDZ!!!!!!!!!! I had purchased 3 rings with diamonds in them. I carefull researched about cut, clarity, color etc. at the time. Only to find out when recently times got tough and gold was up I went to sell. (Since I spent hours and days to get the GREAT deal) All diamonds were CZ’s!! The purchaser was suprised I even thought they were diamonds. Their C.S. is so horrible it wasn’t even whorth trying to get my $ back.

  10. I have purchsed from Bidz.com many times and have been disappointed only a few times. The rings are beautiful and the $25 resizing fee is one of the best prices I have found. I always look close at the item on screen and if it looks hazy, I move on to something else. Everyone in my family got a ring last year for xmas and they were all pleased. My mother has priced her jewelry I have given her and the jeweler has always complimented her on her rings and repaired them when needed. Yes Bidz.com has some tricks up there sleeve but all and all I have been pleased.

  11. I bought 700.00 worth of garbage. Diamonds fell out gold turned into silver tarnised crap and I am very unsatified with the quailty and want my money back. I would like to know if you know who I can file a complaint to or how I can get a total refund on this bubble gum machine jewerly, it’s ok if you don’t know I am determine to find a way to get back my money and shipping and handeling and every time they see my name they better think twice cause I will find that loop and they will wish they never done buisness with me I will be consulting an attorney and this is far from over I will get my money back!!! from a VERY unhappy customer that got ripped off. and enough is enough with these scams.

By Pam on Oct 26, 2008

  12. I will be looking into a class action lawsuit and if any one wants to get involved provide information of attorney’s and let get this party started please lets put words into action!!

  13. I HAVE MADE SEVERAL PURCHASES FROM BIDZ AND ASSOCIATE COMPANIES AND I HAVE BEEN SATISFIED WITH SOME OF THE MERCHANDISE BUT I SET RULES FOR MY SELF FROM THE VERY BEGINNING THAT NO MATTER HOW GOOD SOMETHING LOOKED I WOULD NEVER GIVE OVER 10% OF WHAT THEY SAID IT WAS WORTH, BUT THE SHIPPING IS ANOTHER THING THEY WILL ONLY LET YOU PAY FOR A LIMITED NUMBER OF ITEMS AT THE SAME TIME SO YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR SHIPPING SEPERATE AND IT IS AN UNREAL AMOUNT. AND THE RESTOCKING FEE IS MORE THAN THE COST OF THE ITEMS SOMETIMES.

  14. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT BIDZ.COM GETS AWAY WITH THE OUTRAGEOUS SHIPPING FEES THEY CHARGE. I ORDERED A TINY RING, THEY CHARGED ME $14.99 PLUS $3.00 ON TOP OF THAT FOR THE SOME BAG THEY PUT MORE OF YOUR ORDER I THINK THATS VERY WRONG TO DO TO PEOPPLE AND THEY SEND THAT IN A TINY LITTLE BAG. THEY DON`T TELL YOU THE POSTAGE UNTIL YOU GET TO THE END,SO YOU NOT ONLY GOT RIPPED OFF BY THE MERCHANDISE, BUT POSTAGE ALSO.

  15. i’ve bought alot of jewelry from bidz.com auctions. for the most part, i’ve been satisfied with the merchandise i received. i do think however, that their shipping charges are outrageous. i’m not so sure about the price tags(not attached to the items
), being an accurate price either.

By deborah k. soule on Nov 7, 2008

  16. BIDZ now is not what it used to be. They had unusual better quality merchandize at all price points. Now they offer junk at lower prices and reserves which was never their hook.

They also ripped you off on shipping and the customer service, was out sourced to Croatia is now a system of pre-set responses, to deny any service to the buyers. Yet, they seem to prosper with the assist of European buyers who utilize the Euro–

Good luck on buying from BIDZ!

  17. Can you imagine what happened to me…I bought a 370.00 ring which I won and I got a slashed envelope with no ring in sight. Who took it? who knows….

By simona wheeler on Nov 18, 2008

  18. Question, what’s up with the timers they use. I’ve tried to purchase things from Bidz, and, assuming it was like other bidding sites, I figured if I got in my bid, when the time was up, if I was the top bidder, I’d get the item. I tried this and was surprised to discover If they haven’t gotten the higher bid they want they just roll the clock and start the time over! What the f#*k is up with that?! Note: Bidz isn’t the only place you can have bad luck. You can get roped even on ebay. I have, several times (Most recently, for a defective ’skeleton’ watch)

  19. bought an engagement ring thought i was getting an si-si1 instead i got what the appraisser called a worthless commercial stone with a visible black dot in the stone. I want blood.

By steve on Nov 29, 2008

  20. Oh terrific! My fiance just bid and won a diamond wedding ring for me on Bidz and paid over $400 for it. We are by NO means wealthy either. He hasn’t paid for it yet though. What do we do?
It looks like a very beautiful ring and the clarity ratings are much better than the rings we looked at in Walmart.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  21. I just happened onto this site. I was looking for some gifts for pre teens. I bid on an opal ring. I was watching the item when it closed. I gave the final bid and the fireworks went off indicating the end of the auction. My name was on there as the winner, then another name was there. Immdeiately there was an offer to buy the ring. I clicked on that screen to see if I could make an offer. Low and behold, there were 2 orders for the ring and both of them had 2 rings on the quanity section. I would have ended up with 4 rings at considerably more than I origionally bid. I do think they are trying to cheat people or rather manuver people and I certainly would never go back to that site to do anything more than look. I didn’t buy anything so I couldn’t particapate in any class action suit, but I would write supporting documents.
