Tuft & Needle Review

Like many modern companies, Tuft & Needle is digitally native (meaning online only). Choosing an online-only presence enables Tuft & Needle, Casper, and Nectar to control costs because they don’t need to pay for physical real estate or retail mark-up. The result is a more affordable mattress for you.

In Tuft & Needle’s case, it also enables the company to focus on customer service and craftsmanship, which are their true passions. For instance, the founders spent countless hours researching the ideal breathable fabric to keep you comfortable while you sleep, and their proprietary foam is freshly poured for their mattresses.

Of course, no two sleepers are the same, so like most brands, Tuft & Needle, which also goes by T&N, developed multiple mattresses to meet their customer needs. All three of the brand’s models are compressed and rolled into a box for easy delivery. You won’t have to worry about meeting a delivery crew at your door since the bed is conveniently delivered in a box to your doorstep.

T&N Original Mattress

Sometimes simplicity is best, and so is the case with beds too. The T&N Original Mattress features two layers of foam which combine to provide both support and cushioning. The adaptive foam is engineered to provide pressure relief in all of the right places, while the open-cell structure moves as you move throughout the night.

The adaptive foam layer (the graphite-infused polyfoam comfort layer) sits atop a support foam layer (high-density polyfoam) in a way that combines to create a sleeping experience that works well for sleepers of all sizes and weights. The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress is the most firm of the mattresses the brand sells, which means it is best suited for heavier sleepers.

The open-cell foam serves multiple purposes. Not only does it react to your body as you shift and turn through the night, but it also acts as a breathable layer that allows heat to escape your body. The open-cell foam (which feels similar to latex foam) was paired with graphite and a cooling gel to create a bed that actively helps you stay relaxed and comfortable while you sleep.

Some beds are incompatible with specific frames, but T&N’s mattresses were thoughtfully designed to be compatible with most bed systems, including platform frames, adjustable frames, traditional frames, and slated frames.

The Mint Mattress

The T&N Original Mattress excels in its simplicity, while the Mint Mattress shines because of the thoughtful addition of a third layer of foam. The Mint Mattress isn’t overly complicated like some of the competition, but the third layer on the bed is designed to provide progressive support. This makes the Mint a touch softer than The T&N Original while still providing a very supportive experience.

The Mint Mattress also includes HeiQ anti-microbial protection as standard and a breathable cover to help regulate your body temperature overnight.

Couples frequently prefer the Mint Mattress over the T&N Original Mattress because the additional layer of adaptive foam reduces motion transfer while also working well for combination sleepers. The Mint works particularly well for side sleepers but will work well for nearly anyone.

The Mint Mattress is a good option for someone that desires something more advanced than the T&N Orignal. Still, for most couples and combination sleepers, we recommend the Hybrid Mattress, which provides more targeted support.

Tuft & Needle vs Nectar vs Casper

The Hybrid Mattress

If you are concerned about spinal alignment or have backaches, you should consider the Hybrid Mattress. One of the troubles with traditional memory foam mattresses is that your body sinks in so much it doesn’t move well to eliminate misalignment or slight discomforts as you sleep. The springs included in the T&N Hybrid model provide a different type of support that allows your body to realign more easily.

The spring system provides a familiar bounce reflective of that extra support, and Tuft & Needle combines that extra support with a carbon-infused foam (

which enhances durability), and graphite and air channels that move heat away from the body. The Hybrid Mattress is a cool-sleeping mattress that reduces body heat while importantly providing responsive support.

The Hybrid bed is our favorite Tuft & Needle mattress, and the one we recommend for most T&N buyers. The Hybrid build which combines springs with comfort layers makes the model the best for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers that change positions throughout the night.

Is Tuft & Needle Worth It?

Tuft & Needle sets itself apart by relentlessly focusing on customer service. While their products are designed to provide an optimized sleeping experience, including technology such as the proprietary T&N adaptive foam, the reality is there are lots of companies making great mattresses.

Not all of those companies focus on elevated customer service as part of their overall product offering. The

Tuft & Needle focus on customer service makes the brand a compelling option as you look for a new mattress.

Casper Review

Anyone considering a box-in-a-mattress needs to consider a Casper mattress. The Casper team were pioneers in the space and offer experience and expertise that is unparalleled in the new world of mattresses. Long gone are the days when driving home with a bed tied to the roof of your car is acceptable. Allow Casper or one of the other featured companies to send a mattress to your door in a box instead.

Nova Hybrid / Wave Hybrid

The Nova Hybrid mattress provides ergonomic alignment and incredible support, packaged in what Casper hails as their most plush mattress. It’s an unexpected combination of support and cushioning, provided by a foam that is divided into seven separate ergonomic zones. As far as online beds go, this is one of the most advanced Hybrid mattresses on the market.

You can add Casper’s Snow Technology for advanced cooling if you are a particularly hot sleeper. To be honest, the added Snow Technology is a little pricey and costing more than 25% of the overall mattress cost as an add-on. Of course, if you frequently wake up hot and sweaty, it may well be worth it.

The standard Nova Hybrid features a top layer of memory foam called Airscape, which allows heat body heat to leave the body. The Snow Technology goes a step (or two) further by including a thin layer of cooling gel memory foam above HeatDelete bands which disburse heat away from your body.

Combining the advanced ergonomic zoned support that works for all sleep positions with cutting-edge cooling technology results in a futuristic Casper mattress that will help you wake up feeling rested. On a firmness scale, it is an excellent middle ground where it is soft and inviting but has enough bounce and support to help you avoid backaches.

The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress is Casper’s most supportive mattress. The advanced ergonomic zones include gel pods that provide spinal alignment and relieve tension. The same Snow Technology which can be added to the Nova Hybrid can also be added to the Wave Hybrid, so the big difference between the two mattresses is the added support level.

Casper vs Nectar vs Tuft & Needle - Mattress Review

Casper Original Mattress

The Casper Original mattress was one of the original mattress-in-a-box products and has stood the test of time with tweaks here and there. The first version came as an all-foam mattress, and while it was fantastic for those looking for a softer mattress, some people needed a little more. With this in mind, Casper developed a hybrid version of the mattress, which is available as an option today. The Casper Original mattress is the brand’s Wave Hybrid bed.

The all-foam bed includes three layers of foam, with a breathable foam called AirScape sitting on top of the other two. The hybrid version has two foam layers above hundreds of springs that properly lift your body as you relax. The springs are surrounded by a firm border that avoids sagging, allowing you to get in and out of bed easier and avoiding that feeling that you might roll off the bed while you sleep.

With thousands of 5-star mattress reviews, we can safely say that the Casper Original is one of the most popular mattresses available on the internet. Now that it is available in all-foam and hybrid builds, it will work for almost any sleeper. The Original Mattress is sold at a lower price point than the Nova Hybrid and Wave Hybrid, so it is a fantastic option for most people.

No box mattresses are needed to pair with any of Casper’s mattresses, so long as you have a strong base layer such as a platform bed. Larger beds (think a king and California king) need to have support legs under the middle of the bed to additional strength.

Casper vs Tuft & Needle vs Nectar

Element Mattress

The Element mattress is simple and effective. It includes only two layers of foam and might be considered comparable to Tuft & Needle’s original mattress. The Element mattress is made with eco-friendly materials, and both layers of breathable polyurethane foam are certified by CertiPUR-US.

This entry-level mattress still features the same Airscape technology featured on Casper’s other mattresses, with thousands of perforations in the top layer of foam designed to maximize airflow. As a result, many people wake up less sweaty, feeling fresher, and in a cleaner bed.

All of Casper’s mattresses are durably designed and made, but it is worth noting that, like any foam mattress, some body impressions may form over time.

Is Casper Worth It?

When most people think of an online mattress company, they think of a Casper Mattress. They’ve been in the game for a while, and they are good at what they do. All of the mattresses work well for hot sleepers because they feature Airscape and other innovative design elements that help keep sleepers cool and comfy.

If you struggle with aches and pains, the Casper Wave Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid are designed to add zoned support to your body in a way that facilitates pressure relief. And all of Casper’s line-up uses foam layers to improve motion isolation, and the Casper Original is available as an all-foam mattress or a hybrid mattress, providing you the ultimate customized sleep experience. The 10-Year warranty is also worth considering.

Some Casper mattresses are considerably more expensive than the competition; however, they are also on the leading edge of research and development. If you want to invest in the best-of-the-best, Casper is worthy of your investment.

Casper vs Nectar vs Tuft & Needle

Nectar Review

If you are looking for that perfect combination of quality and affordability, look no further than a Nectar mattress. The founders set out to create a better bed, and they did just that while offering unheard-of customer service and prices below the rest of the industry.

If that sounds like crazy platitudes, consider their 365-night trial and Nectar’s forever warranty. Few brands offer anything close to this, but if you are in the market for a mattress because you need a better night’s sleep, the Nectar team doesn’t want you to lose sleep worrying about whether you made the right purchase.

The only way you can offer guarantees as strong as these is if you are entirely confident in your product. Based on our review, the quality matches their confidence, and the affordable price points are only a bonus consideration.

All of Nectar’s mattresses are made with foam. They don’t currently offer any hybrid beds like some of the competition. One significant benefit here is reduced noise. While none of the mattresses we reviewed are loud, any bed with springs has the propensity for tiny squeaks. Foam mattresses eliminate this problem.

Nectar Mattress

The original Nectar mattress is a premium memory foam mattress designed to cradle your body while you sleep perfectly. While some foam mattresses are too soft, the original Nectar mattress is just right. And not only does the gel-infused memory foam comfortably support your body, but it absorbs motion as well. These mattresses have very little motion transfer, making for happy sleep partners.

The quilted cool cover introduces a breathable poly-blend cover with cooling technology that helps sleepers remain temperature neutral throughout the night. Below the cover sits the unique gel memory foam that provides pressure relief and comfort. Since you spend somewhere near a third of your life sleeping, getting your mattress right is vital. These top two layers are thoughtfully designed for temperature control and cushioning, both critical components in getting a good night’s sleep.

Still, a premium mattress needs substantial support. This is the reason many of Nectar’s competitors have introduced hybrid mattresses featuring coils and foam. The Nectar mattress provides support with a 7-inch support core made from high-density polyfoam, which sits directly below a dynamic support layer that is responsive to your body’s pressure points against the bed. Both support layers are made from premium foam and designed to provide relief to all sleep styles.

Nectar vs Casper vs Tuft & Needle - Mattress Review

Nectar Premier Mattress

The Nectar Premier mattress is naturally similar to the Nectar original mattress, but there are a few key differences. For instance, the Nectar Premier includes an extra inch of dynamically adjusting foam designed to adapt to your body as you move. The Premier also includes ActiveCoolHD in the gel-infused memory foam layer. ActiveCool HD responds to rising and dropping body temperatures to help you better maintain temperature neutrality.

The denser comfort layer and enhanced cooling technology put the Nectar Premier on par with other premium mattress companies, but many of those brands don’t have as many affordable options as Nectar does. This is why we mentioned that if finding value is your greatest concern, Nectar is the brand for you.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleep, a stomach sleeper, or a combo sleeper; the Nectar Premier mattress was designed to have an ideal combination of comfort and support. On a scale of 1 to 10, the Nectar Premier lands “just right” at 6.5, providing all of the support you need to relieve aches and pains while also providing a pillowy cushion for comfort.

And here is something else that is fun: Nectar is an official sleep partner for Google Nest. When you purchase a Nectar Premier mattress or a Nectar Premier Copper mattress, Nectar will throw in a Nest Hub with Sleep Sensing. Google’s Sleep Sensing technology uses motion and sound to detect how well you sleep and provides a summary each morning if you would like to see it. Google then uses the insights learned (all avoiding a camera) to provide valuable recommendations to help you get a better night’s sleep.

Honestly, it’s already impressive that Nectar sells such quality mattresses in this price range, but the fact that they include a Google Nest makes the Nectar Premier and Nectar Premier Copper even better options.

Nectar vs Tuft & Needle vs Casper

Nectar Premier Copper Mattress

The Nectar Premier Copper mattress is designed to be the brand’s most supportive mattress, with a medium-firm feel. Because of the additional support layers, the Premier Copper model also happens to be the brand’s tallest mattress. The bed features a 9-inch bottom layer of high-density foam for extra support and a 4-inch layer of Nectar’s pressure-relieving gel with ActiveCool HD.

But you are probably curious about the copper nomenclature. The mattress cover has heat-conductive copper fibers woven into the fabric. This cooling technology is combined with the Active Cool HD technology include on the Premier mattress to create one of the best temperature regulating mattresses available on the market and setting a new industry standard. Combined, the technologies carry heat away from the body.

The Nectar Premier Copper mattress is an excellent choice for anyone but offers a particularly enticing option to heavier sleepers the will be extra supported by the thicker support foam and cooled by a combination of pioneering technologies.

As previously mentioned, because Nectar is an official sleep partner for Google Nest, they will include one with your purchase so that you can experience the benefits of Google’s Sleep Sensing technology.

Is Nectar Worth it?

With more than 25,000 5-Star Customer Reviews, Nectar offers an imposing combination of quality and affordability. They could certainly charge more for their mattresses, but we are glad they don’t because they fill a niche offering unparalleled value to their customers.

With a lifetime warranty and 365-night sleep trial, there is a minimal downside to trying a Nectar mattress. The Nectar team uses premium materials and innovative technologies, and they’ve developed a nice mix of product options that will meet nearly any price point or specific mattress need. And, of course, they offer no contact delivery since their mattresses are shipped compressed in a box.

Nectar vs Casper vs Tuft & Needle

Which Mattress Is Best?

Like any tough decision, deciding between Tuft And Needle, Casper, and Nectar largely depends on your budget and what you are looking for. Your decision might also depend on whether you are looking to complete a total bedroom makeover, or if you are just looking to splurge for the perfect bed.

Tuft And Needle mattresses are simplistic and straightforward, and they pride themselves on industry-leading customer service. Casper mattresses are well-established, and their top-end beds include some of the most premium technologies and materials ever included in a bed. Nectar falls somewhere between Tuft & Needle and Casper, offering a premium experience at an affordable price.

For simplicity, we think there are two clear differentiators to consider among this group. The Casper team makes mattresses with unparalleled quality and innovation. If you have the money and are looking for a high-end mattress, we recommend the Casper Wave Hybrid or Casper Nova Hybrid.

On the other hand, if finding the best value appeals to you, we recommend choosing Nectar. All of the Nectar mattresses offer exceptional value, but we are particularly fond of the Nectar Premier mattress. If you are on a seriously tight budget, the original Nectar bed is still a fantastic option. And on top of exceptional value, Nectar offers a 365-night sleep trial and forever warranty. While purchasing something like a mattress online can be intimidating, the Nectar team offers everything you need to ease your mind.

A:

One of the co-founders learned to tuft mattresses by hand in the early days of the company, and that authentic and timeless experience stuck with him as they were looking to name the company. The process of tufting requires a large tufting needle, and thus Tuft & Needle was born.

A:

The short answer is that we recommend reading each brand's warranty information. The long answer is that most warranties cover defective mattress issues. If they send you a damaged mattress or that falls apart because of poor construction, they will take care of you. They won't replace your bed because of normal wear and tear or improper use.

A:

Again here, the short answer is that you need to read the return policy for each brand. The longer answer is that they all offer some sort of return policy. Nectar, for instance, will work with you to find a mattress donation center in your local area. They don't expect you to compress your mattress and shove it back in a box. 😀

A:

In short, yes. Your sleeping position may result in aches and pains if you aren’t sleeping on the right mattress model, with the most appropriate firmness levels. Side sleepers sometimes need a softer model that cradles the curvature of their body, while back sleepers often require the support of a firmer model. Medium-firmness, hybrid model beds generally work for the most types of sleepers.
