While personal pizza ovens may be something you never even heard of before the last few years, they have developed and diversified at a rapid rate. Ooni alone now has six different pizza ovens, including the all-new multi-fuel pizza oven called the Ooni Karu 16. In comparingRoccbox vs. Ooni, it is fairly obvious that there are very distinct differences between the various ovens.
The Roccbox is smaller and less versatile than several of the Ooni competitors, but it does feature an outer-silicone skin that reduces the risk of burns, which makes it popular with restaurant owners. Still, for most pizza lovers,Ooni is the best option for residential use.
To be clear, though, there are major differences among even the various Ooni models, so you have to be very thoughtful in choosing which unit is right for you, and this is where the pizza party starts.
Which Ooni Pizza Ovens Use Gas?
Regardless of which Ooni you choose, you will be investing in a high-quality pizza oven, so the key is to think through how you plan to use your pizza oven. Gas pizza ovens work great for those that prefer low maintenance and easy control. If you’re not a fire master, you might choose to go in this direction because the temperature can be controlled via a know, which is very convenient.
The Ooni Koda is specifically designed to work with gas tanks. If you are looking for a quick evening dinner, the OonI Koda might be for you. The Ooni Koda 12 is the more portable pizza oven and bakes 12-inch pizzas. If you are investigating portable pizza ovens, your decision will likely come down to the Ooni Koda 12 and the Ooni Fyra, which is a wood pellet pizza oven.
The Ooni Koda 16 is a [quality built pizza oven](https://moonlightreviews.com/where-are-ooni-ovens-manufactured/] that also uses a propane tank; however, as you may have guessed, it bakes 16-inch pizzas. Lastly, the Ooni Pro and Ooni Karu models are multi-fule pizza ovens that use gas when the add-on gas burner is bought and attached.
While the gas burner is convenient, we still love the authenticity of wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, which is a big reason we love the versatility that the multi-fuel units have to offer. What better way to enjoy your outdoor spaces than with restaurant-quality homemade pizzas cooked in your backyard?
Disclaimer: Make sure that you follow manufacturer guidelines and use the proper fuel. The outdoor pizza ovens are designed to work with propane, so don’t even try to use any other gas fuels, as it could be very dangerous. The units aren’t compatible with natural gas. One note: various regions may use different adapters, so make sure you purchase a suitable adaptor for your propane tank.
Can you Use Wood Chips in Ooni?
You can use wood chips or chunk wood with your Ooni, but don’t worry substantially about which flavor of wood you utilize. Hickory and mesquite woods are the most popular, but the pizzas don’t cook long enough to absorb any intricate flavor from the wood. You will definitely taste a little of that wood flavor many people love, but choosing hickory over applewood might do more for your sense of smell than your sense of taste.
Still, if you want to mix wood chips in with your wood chips on the fuel tray, it certainly won’t hurt anything. Interestingly, this is an instance where the crispy crust that the stone baking board produces may be just as important as the wood flavoring. The extreme heat and unique cooking surface make all of the difference here.
Which Ooni Ovens use Wood?
Don’t try throwing wood in your Ooni Koda, as that is a recipe for disaster. The Ooni Fyra is made for use with wood pellets (not wood chunks), while the Ooni Pro and Ooni Karu work with multiple fuel options.
There are quite a few reasons we prefer wood-fired pizzas, but the obvious beauty of the multi-fuel pizza ovens is that when you are in a hurry, you can use gas, but when you have time for authenticity, you can stop at your local hardware store to pick up your favorite wood flavor. While the taste may not seep into the pizza flavoring during the 60s seconds you are cooking with your Ooni, the smell still does wonders for the experience.
The irony here is that while I still recommend that you use hickory or mesquite wood, cooking a pizza is the exact opposite experience to using a smoker, which requires a “low and slow” cooking technique. The best barbeque experiences require slow smoking for hours, even overnight, to allow that rich, smoky flavor to seep into the wood.
If you have a taste for barbecue, but don’t have a smoker, or don’t want to spend the entire night outside, you can cook barbecue on your Ooni, as well as loaves of bread, desserts, and nearly any fire-cooked creation your mind imagines.
Can You Use Wood Pellets in Ooni?
The Ooni Fyra is a portable pizza oven specifically designed with a pellet hopper and designed to work with wood pellets. The Ooni Pro is also designed to work with wood pellets if you purchase the optional pellet burner, but the Ooni Pro is an older model, and the Ooni pellet burner is now hard to find. The newer Ooni Karu will work with wood and charcoal but isn’t designed to work with a pellet burner.
While the Ooni Fyra only bakes pizzas that are 12 inches wide, it is still a serious contender for those that want a more natural aroma that pellets provide, while still maintaining a little ease of use and storage. While we love the Karu 16 multi-fuel pizza oven, the wood and charcoal are a little more difficult to deal with than wood pellets, even if we prefer the experience.
How Long Do Pellets Last In Ooni?
One bag of Ooni wood pellets will last for 8 to 12 hours, depending on how hot you keep the fire. Realistically, you won’t often need to use your oven for more than an hour at a time, unless you are throwing an epically amazing pizza party, so one bag of Ooni wood pellets should last eight or more cooking events.
You should also know that in addition to responsibly sourcing any wood used for Ooni products, the Ooni pellets are food safe. You can use them in any Ooni product that burns wood pellets, or any other grill that consumes wood pellets.
Tools Needed For Outdoor Pizza Oven
Once you have your Ooni set up, know how to use your Ooni, and have chosen the proper fuel, you also need to make sure you have the proper tools before you get started. While it might not be the sexiest tool, we recommend using a pair of Ooni’s pizza oven gloves. 900 degrees is hot, and the gloves make it much easier to safely add fuel to your pizza oven fire.
From there, we recommend that you work with two pizza peels. Use a wooden peel or aluminum peel for prepping and moving your pizza to and from the oven, but use a second, perforated pizza peel to turn your pizza. If you keep the second pizza peel warm near your oven, it will be much easier to slide the pizza in and out of the oven.
